"Half Shekel" Cookies for Parshas Ki Sisa

Do your kids join you in the kitchen? Do they bake on their own? These parsha cookies are simple enough for those tweens to roll up their sleeves, get into the kitchen and bake away!

In this week's Torah portion, the Jews are told to contribute a half a shekel in atonement for the sin of the Golden Calf. The half shekel was made of silver, and was then melted down and used in the construction of the Tabernacle.

For this week’s Shabbos treat, let’s create these delicious cookies!

What you need:

  • Zebra cookie dough (recipe below)

  • Chocolate coins

  • Edible silver luster dust

  • Paint brush (new or used for food)

Zebra Cookie Ingredients:

2 cups sugar

1 cup cocoa

2 cups flour

½ cup oil

4 eggs

1 tsp vanilla

2 tsp baking powder


Preheat the oven to 350 degrees fahrenheit.

In a medium-sized bowl, mix all of the ingredients together.

Once the dough is formed, scoop out cookie dough and form them into balls. Place them onto a lined cookie sheet, and press them down slightly.

Using the paint brush, gently brush on some silver luster dust.

Bake the cookies for 12-15 minutes.

Remove the cookies from the oven and allow them to cool for a few minutes.

Once the cookies have cooled slightly, but are still warm, open the chocolate coins and place them onto the center of each cookie, pushing them down lightly.

Once the cookies are cooled, reapply additional silver luster dust.
